Valero Reports Into Record Refining Margins. Here’s What Traders Watch First.

Valero Energy hits the newswires this morning before the open with Wall Street expecting what could be the best quarter in the company’s history. Analysts forecast earnings of $20.90 per share on revenue of $43.36 billion, representing a 67% jump from the prior quarter’s $12.54 per share. That gap is not noise: it is the first clean read on whether seven months of Gulf-conflict disruption have permanently widened the spread between crude and product, or whether that money is already fading.

While the media distracts you with stories about the next big AI IPO… The world’s largest investors are moving their money into one asset – at the fastest pace in a generation. This asset has crushed the S&P 500’s return over the past 12 months… More than TRIPLED the S&P 500’s return in 2025… and has outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 25 years by more than 1,100 percentage points. According to one Wall Street veteran, with over 40 years of professional investing experience… the biggest gains could be still ahead. That’s why he’s urging you to make one money move now.

Brent rose to $111.11 a barrel this morning, up 2.1% from the prior session, after an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and a separate incident in which debris from an intercepted drone killed two people at an Aramco-operated oil field in Saudi Arabia’s southeast, according to the Associated Press. That supply dislocation is the engine behind every number Valero is about to report.

The Margin Question

Wall Street projects regional refining margins ranging from $36 to $39 per barrel of throughput, well above the $22.02 per barrel Valero achieved in the second quarter. The consensus average for refining margin per barrel of throughput stands at $37.03, versus $13.14 in the same quarter last year. Execution against those numbers is the first number traders reach for.

Capital return is the second. The company returned $2.6 billion to shareholders in Q2, and UBS projects buybacks of $3.3 billion for Q3. Valero reported $3.7 billion of net income in Q2 and $5.0 billion for the first six months of 2026. The Q3 figure would push full-year earnings well past anything the refiner has ever posted.

One caveat worth weighing before reading any headline number as clean confirmation: recent market reporting shows European diesel cracks averaging around $60 a barrel in early October before rebounding later in the month, underscoring how quickly cracks can compress and re-expand as freight, crude, and product flows shift. Valero is reporting a backward-looking quarter into a forward environment that may be less one-way than the quarter just ended.

Sector Read-Through

VLO shares have climbed nearly 170% year to date as the spread-driven cycle accelerated. Peers have moved in sympathy: PBF Energy is up about 205% year to date, and Marathon Petroleum is up about 188% in 2026. All three report within two weeks of Valero, making this morning’s result a sector positioning event, not just a single-name one. Elevated crack spreads have significantly improved the profitability outlook for Marathon Petroleum and other large refiners alongside Valero.

The sector’s shared tailwind also carries a shared policy risk. A diesel export ban under Treasury review could collapse the very margin conditions lifting Valero, Marathon, and Phillips 66 simultaneously.

Scenario Framework

Bull Case: Valero posts above the $20.90 consensus with refining margin per barrel above $37, management guides that distillate cracks remain structurally elevated through H1 2027, and buyback authorization rises toward $4 billion. VLO reclaims its October 14 all-time closing high of $459.78, pulling MPC and PSX to fresh highs. Wells Fargo’s $485 price target, maintained with an Overweight rating on October 14, becomes the next gravitational level.

Base Case: Results land near consensus. Management acknowledges the October fade in Gulf Coast cracks and guides cautiously on Q4 throughput. The key scrutiny falls on whether elevated margins represent a structural shift or a cyclical peak. VLO consolidates in the $420-$450 range; sector ETFs hold gains without extending.

Undiscovered Sub – $1 Gold-Silver Royalty Stock Takes Flight

Gold and silver are in a powerful bull market – and one little-known sub – $1 royalty stock is entering its biggest growth phase yet. The company is already generating record revenue from producing gold and silver mines and has just announced the largest transaction in its history. Better still, a powerful strategic relationship provides direct access to a steady pipeline of deals across the global mining landscape. And the smart money is already paying attention.

Get in early while shares are still below $1.

Bear Case: A revenue miss or a sharp downward revision to Q4 margin guidance triggers a derating across the complex. PBF fell 9.9% and Valero 5.9% in the week before the release on concerns that crack-spread softening was accelerating. A weak result confirms that concern. VLO tests the $400 level; PBF, the smallest and most levered name, absorbs the sharpest percentage move.

Active Trader Framework

The decisive window is the 30 minutes following the pre-open release and the 10:00 AM ET earnings call. Watch the Gulf Coast refining margin per barrel first, then the Q4 guidance language on distillate spreads. VLO’s 200-day moving average and VWAP from the past 30 sessions both anchor in the $390-$410 zone, providing a structural support reference if the initial reaction is negative.

Position sizing should reflect the binary character of an earnings event with Brent still yo-yoing in a $97-$112 range this month. Sector cross-trades between VLO and PBF offer a relative-value expression with less outright commodity exposure than a directional crude bet. Risk parameters belong on the number before the call opens, not after.

Preparation, not prediction, is the edge here. The data arrives this morning. The discipline to act on it is what separates observation from execution.
