TXN Just Delivered

The beat is in. Here is what matters for the next five sessions.

Market Snapshot

Wednesday’s session was a study in controlled tension. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1% by the close to approximately 7,509, with the Nasdaq Composite off 0.5%, as rising oil prices and a crowded earnings calendar kept buyers cautious ahead of results from Alphabet, Tesla, and Texas Instruments. Brent crude climbed above $92 a barrel following a fresh escalation in U.S. military activity against Iran, adding a geopolitical weight that competing forces could not fully offset.

The VIX sat at 17.05 going into Wednesday, down sharply from recent highs, suggesting that the broader market is not pricing systemic stress. Market breadth told a slightly more complicated story: roughly 61% of S&P 500 stocks were trading above their 50-day moving averages, a pullback from the near-70% readings seen earlier this month. Nine of 11 S&P sectors closed in positive territory the prior session, led by Technology, which gained 2.4%, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surging 5.2% on Tuesday as beaten-down names caught a bid.

That semiconductor recovery matters here. TXN was bouncing heading into its report. And after the close, the numbers came in.

Why TXN Is in Focus

Texas Instruments reported Q2 2026 results after today’s close, and the numbers cleared the bar that Wall Street had been raising for months.

Revenue came in at $5.46 billion. EPS hit $2.14. Consensus heading into the report was $5.24 billion in revenue and approximately $1.92 to $1.95 in non-GAAP EPS. Management’s own Q2 guidance had set the ceiling at $5.40 billion in revenue and $2.05 in EPS. TXN came in above both. Revenue grew 23% year over year according to CEO Haviv Ilan’s own commentary, with broad growth led by industrial, data center, and automotive.

Trailing twelve-month cash flow from operations reached $8.7 billion. Free cash flow for the same period was $6.5 billion. That FCF trajectory is not a minor footnote. The company’s long-running capacity buildout across its 300mm fabs in Sherman, Texas and Lehi, Utah is now producing the financial output that investors were asked to wait for through several years of heavy capital expenditure. The math is delivering.

This is why the stock deserves attention right now. Not because it beat expectations on paper. Because it beat them at a moment when the broader market was questioning whether the chip recovery had legs, and the answer from TXN’s core industrial and analog business is clearly yes.

Technical Picture

Heading into tonight’s report, TXN had been working through a meaningful pullback from its all-time high of $334.03, set on June 22. The stock found support at the $280 level, bouncing 3.5% on Tuesday to close at $291.30. That bounce off $280 was not random. It aligned with a confluence of moving average support and represented the stock returning to a level that had acted as resistance on the way up earlier in the year.

The technical structure before earnings was worth noting. According to Schaeffer’s quantitative analysis, TXN was trading within 0.75 times the 80-day moving average’s 20-day average true range, after spending at least 80% of the prior two weeks and 80% of the prior 42 sessions above that trendline. That specific pattern has appeared 16 times over the past decade, with the stock higher one month later 88% of the time, averaging a gain of 6.4%.

The stock was also trading above its 200-day simple moving average and near the top of its 52-week range coming into the event, despite the pullback from $334. A 52-week range of $152.76 to $334.03 frames how far this stock has moved during the cycle recovery. The $280 level now becomes critical to watch as the first line of support if the after-hours reaction fades.

Key levels to monitor over the next five sessions:

  • $280: Primary support. The bounce off this level on Tuesday was sharp and clean. A close below $280 would shift the short-term trend from constructive to cautionary.
  • $291 to $295: The pre-earnings consolidation zone. How the stock behaves in this range in the sessions following the report will indicate whether buyers are stepping in or fading the move.
  • $310 to $320: The first meaningful resistance band between the current price and the all-time high of $334.03. A sustained move into this range would signal genuine momentum resumption.
  • $334.03: The all-time high set on June 22. Reclaiming this level would be the clearest confirmation that the post-earnings reaction is translating into trend continuation rather than a one-day spike.

RSI coming into the report was near 43, reflecting a stock that had cooled significantly from overbought conditions. MACD was negative but tightening. Neither indicator suggested exhausted selling. Both left room for a sustained recovery on a fundamental beat.

The Catalyst

The Q2 beat is the primary catalyst. But the numbers that matter most for the next several sessions are not what TXN reported for Q2. They are what management said about Q3.

Here is why guidance framing matters more than the reported quarter. In Q1 2026, TXN beat estimates by more than 23% and revenue came in $300 million above consensus. Industrial revenues rose more than 30% year over year. Data center revenues surged roughly 90% year over year. That single quarter triggered a 19.43% single-day gain. The Q2 beat is real and substantial, but the bar was higher this time around, which means the market’s reaction depends heavily on where management sets Q3 expectations.

Several secondary catalysts also deserve attention over the coming sessions.

First, the CFO transition. TXN announced that Julie Knecht will take over as CFO effective August 1, succeeding Rafael Lizardi, who plans to retire at the end of August. Tonight’s guidance commentary carries extra significance because it represents the final formal guidance from the outgoing CFO. Any change in tone, framing, or conservatism relative to prior quarters will be noticed.

Second, the dividend. TXN declared a quarterly cash dividend of $1.42 per share on July 16, with an ex-dividend date of July 31. For income-oriented participants, this creates a near-term positioning consideration heading into next week.

Third, free cash flow trajectory. CEO Haviv Ilan has projected $8 in free cash flow per share for full-year 2026, and trailing twelve-month FCF of $6.5 billion reported today represents a substantial step toward that target. Any commentary confirming the full-year FCF trajectory will reinforce the longer-term investment case and keep institutional buyers engaged.

The analog chip recovery story is also broader than TXN alone. How this company guides for Q3 will be read as a signal for the entire analog and embedded semiconductor segment. If guidance is strong, expect sympathy moves in names like Analog Devices, Microchip Technology, and NXP Semiconductors over the following sessions.

Risk Assessment

The risks here are real and worth holding alongside the opportunity.

Valuation is the first concern. Going into the report, TXN carried a trailing P/E ratio of approximately 49.82 times and a forward 12-month P/E of 35.26 times, compared with the industry average closer to 22.94 times. At those multiples, investors have already paid for a strong recovery. A beat on reported numbers that is accompanied by cautious guidance does not simply disappoint. It can create a sharp repricing of forward estimates across the sector.

The geopolitical backdrop is the second concern. Brent crude above $92 a barrel and ongoing U.S. military activity against Iran are keeping inflation and supply chain risk in the conversation. Industrial customers are TXN’s largest revenue driver, and any deterioration in the global manufacturing environment could affect order patterns in the second half of 2026. Industrial demand, while recovering strongly, still sits approximately 15% below its 2022 peak. That recovery is real but not complete.

Insider selling is the third factor. Over the past three months, insiders have sold approximately $88.9 million in shares with zero purchases recorded. That level of selling does not break a bull case, but it deserves acknowledgment as a data point alongside the institutional upgrade activity.

Finally, sector volatility. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged 5.2% on Tuesday as beaten-down names recovered. That kind of broad sector move can reverse quickly if upcoming earnings from other major chip companies disappoint. TXN’s after-hours move will be set in the context of how the broader semi complex trades Thursday morning.

Trader’s Checklist

Over the next one to five sessions, here is what to monitor before making any positioning decision in TXN.

  • Q3 guidance midpoint vs. current consensus. Street consensus for Q3 revenue was tracking near $5.4 to $5.5 billion heading into tonight. If management guides the Q3 midpoint above that range, the bull case strengthens materially. If it comes in below, expect a muted or negative reaction regardless of Q2’s strength.
  • After-hours price reaction and where it stabilizes. A clean hold above $300 in after-hours trading would be a constructive signal. A fade back toward $291 or below suggests the market is treating the beat as priced-in rather than as new information.
  • Thursday morning opening range. The first 30 minutes of trading Thursday will reveal whether institutional buyers are stepping in or waiting. A gap higher that holds is bullish continuation. A gap higher that reverses within the first hour requires caution.
  • $280 support integrity. This level must hold on any post-earnings pullback. A breach of $280 on closing basis would suggest the earnings-driven move is exhausted and shifts attention to the $260 to $265 range as the next meaningful support.
  • Volume confirmation. A sustained move toward $310 to $320 on below-average volume would be suspect. Meaningful follow-through requires institutional participation, visible in volume readings that exceed the 20-session average of approximately 9.2 million shares.
  • Analog segment Q3 guidance specifically. TXN’s analog business is the core of the revenue story. Watch for any specific commentary on analog demand trajectory, channel inventory levels, and lead times. Stabilizing lead times and reduced channel inventory have been cited as key indicators of the cycle recovery’s durability.
  • Sector sympathy moves. Watch Analog Devices (ADI), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) in Thursday’s session. How these names respond to TXN’s Q3 outlook will confirm whether the analog chip recovery is being viewed as company-specific or as a broader sector signal.
  • CFO commentary tone. With Rafael Lizardi stepping down at the end of August and Julie Knecht taking over as CFO on August 1, any shift in guidance language or financial framework language is worth noting. Transitions at this level occasionally bring changes to how guidance is framed.
  • Oil prices and macro backdrop. Brent crude above $92 and Middle East escalation are the macro variables most likely to compete with earnings news for market attention over the next several sessions. A meaningful spike in crude or a significant deterioration in the Iran situation could pressure the broader market and create headwinds for even a strong earnings reaction.

Active traders rarely get to watch a 90-year-old semiconductor company become the most consequential earnings report of the week. Tonight, TXN earned that status.

The beat is in. The numbers cleared both Wall Street consensus and management’s own guidance ceiling. Trailing free cash flow of $6.5 billion over the past twelve months is the clearest evidence yet that years of capacity investment are beginning to pay off at scale.

What happens over the next five sessions comes down to one thing: whether the Q3 guidance is strong enough to justify a stock trading at 35 times forward earnings that has already run 69% year to date. If it is, the path back toward $334 is open. If it is not, $291 will feel less like a floor and more like a ceiling.

Plan both sides. Watch the levels. Let the market confirm before committing.
