What Big Oil buried in 1976

A note from our friends at Behind the Markets(ad)

Dear Friend,

In 1976, a Chevron drilling team tapped an energy source so powerful it could run a city.

No fuel costs. No carbon. No supply chain.

They proved it worked. Then they killed the project.

Unocal proved it worked. Killed it.

Texaco proved it worked. Killed it.

Three of the largest oil companies on Earth confirmed the same thing.

And all three buried the results for the same reason: it would have destroyed their core business.

For fifty years, the official line was “the technology isn’t ready.”

The technology was fine. The threat was too big.

Now one company has spent sixty years perfecting what Big Oil refused to touch.

Google just locked in a 15-year contract. Bill Gates wrote a $100 million check. And on November 17th, the government hands it a competitive edge no other energy source gets.

Big Oil had fifty years to act. They chose not to.

SK Hynix Reports Tonight. A $12 Billion Dividend Decision Comes With It.

At 8 pm ET tonight, SK Hynix drops its Q3 results. The numbers already look settled: consensus is anchored at roughly ₩98.2 trillion in revenue, up more than 300% year on year and 30% sequentially, with operating profit near ₩77 trillion and an operating margin approaching 78.4%. That would mark the sixth consecutive record quarter. The market already moved on it. In Seoul on Tuesday, shares closed up more than 6%, while SKHY on Nasdaq finished at $142.62, up 4.1%, pulling off a 52-week low of $124.80 that had formed after a roughly 30% slide from early-October highs.

The earnings themselves are almost secondary. What traders are actually pricing tonight is a ₩16 trillion ($12 billion) special dividend, funded by an estimated ₩20 trillion in gains from SK Hynix’s exit from its Kioxia stake. At roughly ₩23,000 per share, that would be nearly 15 times the company’s annual fixed dividend and more than seven times the total ₩2.1 trillion distributed last year. The company has said nothing is finalized, filing a disclosure on October 26 confirming it is reviewing shareholder return measures ahead of tonight’s board resolution. The announcement is coming either way. Barclays analyst Simon Coles has a $300 price target and expects SK Hynix to return approximately 15% of its market value to shareholders.

What HBM4 Actually Means for the Peer Group

The more structurally important line in tonight’s release is HBM4. SK Hynix begins reflecting sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory revenue tied to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform in Q3 for the first time. Micron reached the same milestone earlier: fiscal Q3 2026 revenue came in at $41.46 billion, up 346% year on year, and Q4 was guided at $50.0 billion with roughly an 86% gross margin. HBM remains fully allocated for 2026 under binding contracts. SanDisk, by contrast, sits squarely in the NAND cycle, with enterprise SSD leverage but no HBM exposure. Western Digital’s angle is nearline HDDs and cloud capacity.

SK Hynix at 5.3x estimated 2026 earnings versus a sector median near 28.7x tells a story about the market’s doubt, not the company’s profitability. The Street’s average price target on SKHY sits at $254.70, implying more than 78% upside from Monday’s close. Analysts carry a Strong Buy consensus across 11 ratings. TrendForce notes that SK Securities projects ₩79 trillion in Q3 operating profit, while Meritz goes as high as ₩80.1 trillion, suggesting the official release could top headline consensus.

Technical Structure Heading Into the Print

SKHY broke a four-month downtrend Tuesday on above-average volume, closing above the 10-day moving average for the first time since late September. The 52-week range spans $124.80 to $199.87, meaning tonight’s result arrives with the stock closer to the annual floor than the ceiling. The KRW-listed shares closed at ₩1,355,000, up 6.27%, with the day’s range between ₩1,347,000 and ₩1,363,000. RSI had been oversold at 34 before Tuesday’s move. Overhead resistance clusters between $155 and $165 on SKHY, corresponding to where the stock spent much of August.

Three Scenarios for the US Open

Bull: SK Hynix confirms the full ₩16 trillion dividend, operating profit lands above ₩79 trillion, and management guides conservatively for Q4 while signaling HBM4 volumes accelerating into 2027. SKHY opens above $155. Micron and SanDisk trade sympathetically, with MU testing the $90 range. The read-across is that AI memory pricing holds well into next year.

Base: Dividend is confirmed at or near ₩16 trillion, operating margin prints at 78%, and Q4 guidance implies continued record earnings. SKHY adds 5 to 8% at the US open. MU and SNDK gain 2 to 4% on the coattails read. Western Digital, with less direct HBM linkage, lags the group.

Bear: Dividend comes in below expectations or the board defers a formal decision. HBM4 shipment commentary is cautious, echoing TrendForce’s note that volumes may have underrun early estimates. Operating margin disappoints at sub-76%. SKHY gives back Tuesday’s gains and tests $132 to $135 support. Micron is insulated by its own contracted backlog but loses 3 to 4% on the guilt-by-association trade.

Tactical Framework

The 9 am KST release on October 28 lands before US pre-market open, giving traders roughly four hours before the cash session. Position sizing ahead of a binary catalyst with this much embedded vol warrants discipline. Key levels: $150 and $155 are the first meaningful resistance bands on SKHY; $132 is where Tuesday’s gap-up began. For MU, the Vera Rubin linkage is real and already contracted, so any SK Hynix margin upside reinforces the bull case without adding direct risk. The divergence to watch is SanDisk versus MU: tonight’s release speaks loudest to DRAM and HBM pricing, less directly to NAND.

Preparation, not prediction, is the discipline here. Tonight’s release has a binary setup with known levels on both sides. Know them before 8 pm.
