Republic Services Is Shedding Contracts on Purpose. That Is the Trade.

Republic Services just reported one of its cleanest quarters in years, and the most telling number was not revenue. It was the 4.3% drop in residential volume.

I spent 25 years at Merrill Lynch and Vanguard watching the same play run, week after week, in every market condition imaginable. The money keeps coming in on every trade. Now that I’m on the outside, I’ve put together a free guide that breaks down exactly how this works, in plain English.

Management prioritized pricing over volume in the residential segment, leading to the intentional shedding of lower-margin municipal contracts. That is a strategic choice most waste companies avoid publicly. RSG is leaning into it.

The Pricing Engine, By the Numbers

Total revenue reached $4.559 billion, representing an 8.2% increase driven by disciplined pricing, Environmental Solutions growth, and acquisitions, as the company detailed in its Oct. 29, 2026 release. Core price on related revenues rose 6.3%, including open-market pricing of 7.6% and restricted pricing of 4.1%. Combined core pricing and higher fuel recovery fees exceeded 8%. That spread above cost inflation is what funds the cash return program.

Republic Services generated year-to-date adjusted free cash flow of about $2.28 billion and ended the quarter with leverage of roughly 2.6x, as management said on the Q3 2026 call. The board noticed: it authorized $5 billion for share repurchases, approved Oct. 28, 2026, and scheduled to run from Jan. 1, 2027 through Dec. 31, 2029.

This Company Could Be the Nvidia of 2027

Marc Chaikin first recommended Nvidia back in 2015. And for anyone who followed that advice, you could have seen gains as high as 21,000%. But if you missed out on Nvidia’s extraordinary run, he now believes another stock could help turn some ordinary Americans into millionaires in 2027.

Where the Margin Story Gets Interesting

The Environmental Solutions segment is the part of RSG most traders underweight. The segment posted organic revenue growth of 21% with adjusted EBITDA margin expansion of 440 basis points to 25.4%, which management attributed on the Q3 2026 call to large emergency response work alongside broader strength in the portfolio. Management cautioned that emergency response is lumpy, but also described broad-based growth across hazardous waste landfills, exploration and production volumes, treatment facilities, and field services. That is not one-quarter noise.

Management raised full-year 2026 guidance to $17.425–$17.475 billion in revenue, $5.550–$5.575 billion in adjusted EBITDA, and $2.565–$2.585 billion in adjusted free cash flow.

The Municipal Contract Exit: Risk or Signal?

The residential volume decline is the surface-level concern. The underlying logic is different. On the Q3 2026 call, CEO Jon Vander Ark said the municipal contract losses were decisions made last year, with the rollover effect felt throughout 2026, and he expects the residential volume trend to improve next year, though he indicated it will likely still be down. The drag is time-limited; the pricing gains are structural.

Vander Ark also said Republic uses pricing tools to focus on customer lifetime value, not just short-term returns, and the company is willing to favor price over volume when necessary. For active traders, that orientation matters: it tells you management will not chase volume at the expense of margin heading into a slower macro environment.

Key Levels and Positioning Context

Republic Services stock jumped about 3.3% to roughly $244 in the first full session after reporting Q3 2026 results. The stock’s price-to-earnings ratio sits in the low-to-mid 30s based on late-October pricing, and targets range widely, indicating that much of the strong outlook may already be reflected in the shares. JPMorgan set a $265 price target post-earnings. The gap between current levels and that target is roughly 8.5%, which is narrow for a name trading at this multiple.

The Q4 setup is asymmetric in one specific way: on the Q3 2026 call, management said the fuel recovery fee is expected to catch up early in the fourth quarter, with about $15 million of Environmental Solutions contribution positively impacting EBITDA. That is a near-term tailwind already embedded in guidance. The risk is margin compression if diesel costs do not taper as expected.

Disciplined traders will watch the $235 level as structural support and treat any move above $252 on volume as a breakout confirmation. The thesis does not require a macro tailwind. It requires RSG to keep doing what it just did: walk away from bad contracts and price the good ones harder.
