Bonus Content: Marathon Petroleum Reports Its Biggest Quarter Ever Into a Crude Market That Has Already Moved

A note from our friends at MarketWise(ad)

Dear Reader,

After so many years in Washington, I thought I was immune to being shocked by what our government could do.

But the actions taking place in D.C. right now have gone FAR beyond anything I could have imagined.

And if you’re not careful, YOU could pay the price.

You’re already seeing it at the grocery story… and when you pump gas…

However, this is all just a foreshadowing of an even greater crisis.

Most Americans will be completely blindsided by what’s about to happen.

So please make sure you, your family, and anyone you care about are prepared.

I explain what I believe is coming… and the #1 first step every American should take to prepare right now – in this new short interview.

You can watch the full thing right here.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ron Paul

Marathon Petroleum Reports Its Biggest Quarter Ever Into a Crude Market That Has Already Moved

The numbers Marathon Petroleum is delivering this morning are historic. Consensus EPS for Q3 2026 sits near $25.74 against $3.01 in Q3 2025, a year-over-year increase of roughly 755%. Full-year 2026 EPS estimates have moved to approximately $65.47, implying a roughly 547% gain over fiscal 2025’s $10.11. That is not a refining cycle. That is a structural regime change driven by the U.S.-Iran war and its sustained disruption of Middle Eastern crude supply.

The problem for traders is that the quarter being reported this morning was earned in a world that no longer exists. Crude sold off hard on Monday as ceasefire hopes briefly lifted sentiment. Separately, the Wall Street Journal reported U.S. strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island. Brent bounced back above $100 by Tuesday morning, but the violence of Monday’s sell-off is the real message: crack spread assumptions embedded in today’s results are being revalued in real time.

Sector Context

Valero set the template two weeks ago. VLO posted Q3 adjusted EPS of $23.90. Refining operating income reached $8.8 billion versus $1.6 billion in the year-ago period. MPC’s consensus refining and marketing margin estimate for Q3 sits near $44.76 per barrel, up from $17.60 a year earlier. If Marathon’s Mid-Continent operations delivered close to that, the report clears consensus comfortably. MPLX, Marathon’s midstream subsidiary, provides a secondary earnings floor independent of crack spread levels, a structural advantage Phillips 66 partly shares through its diversified model.

MPC stock closed last week near $444, off roughly 10% from a recent high above $493, with the 52-week range spanning $161.93 to $493.98. The stock is up approximately 121% over the past 12 months. That kind of run concentrates risk: MPC fell 4.75% the day after its Q2 2026 blowout beat, and the stock was down about 5.65% the day after its Q1 2026 report. The earnings bar and the post-earnings reaction function are operating on completely different logic.

The Three Scenarios

Bull case. MPC clears $25.74 comfortably, Mid-Con margins land above $44, MPLX distributions hold, and management reaffirms the buyback cadence. The stock had $6.13 billion in repurchase authorization as of June 30. A credible capital return signal, combined with management commentary that Qeshm escalation supports sustained crack spread widening, could push MPC back toward the $470-$490 range. Geopolitical risk premium in crude supports product margins beyond Q3.

Base case. MPC beats modestly, around $26-$28 per share, but management flags turnaround costs on Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent conversion units as an ongoing margin headwind. Guidance for Q4 is cautious given crude volatility. The stock oscillates within a $420-$455 band as traders weigh a backward-looking beat against a forward margin picture that Monday’s crude move already complicated.

Bear case. The turnaround drag exceeds guidance, capturing below the $44 per barrel R&M margin estimate, and management cannot credibly argue that Qeshm escalation structurally re-widens spreads. A miss below $24 triggers forced selling in a stock already down from its highs. Analyst targets range from roughly $457 average to $560 high, leaving multiple compression risk if the margin cycle is perceived to have peaked. Downside to the $390-$400 range is plausible on a genuine miss.

Trading Framework

The 11 a.m. ET conference call matters more than the headline number today. Traders should monitor management’s commentary on Q4 throughput guidance, turnaround completion timelines, and how the company frames Hormuz disruption risk to forward margins. Historically MPC has beaten consensus in 8 of its last 8 quarters. Separately, a five-year lookback compiled by Trefis shows the median one-day move after earnings was +3.7% on positive reactions and -4.5% on negative reactions.

Key technical levels: the $428-$433 zone represents Monday’s pre-open range and serves as immediate support. The 50-day range low at approximately $355 defines the structural floor. On the upside, $470 is the first meaningful resistance cluster before the prior high near $494.

Preparation here means separating what the quarter was from what the margin environment will be. The crack spreads that produced $25-plus EPS were earned when crude was higher and the Hormuz premium was firmly bid. Both variables are unsettled this morning. Position size accordingly.
